Nancy Carroll joins the faculty and administration at The New Academy with more than twenty-five years of experience in the academic setting. Nancy is a World Languages teacher of Spanish, French, Italian and Latin and will also be the on-site Director of The New Academy.
Nancy was born and raised in Connecticut, graduating from Newington High School. She went on to study at the University of Vermont where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in Spanish, minoring in French. She was offered and accepted a full scholarship and teaching position at Marquette University and left New Hampshire for Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was honored at Marquette by acceptance into Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish Honor Society, and graduated with her MA in Spanish Literature - Peninsular and Latin American.
Upon graduation, Nancy returned to Connecticut to teach at her alma mater, Newington High School. While teaching high school Spanish, Nancy was paid to attend the University of Central Connecticut to study Italian in preparation for teaching introductory Italian courses at the high school level. Marriage and a call from Marquette University led her back to the midwest where she taught students at the intermediate level of college Spanish. Nancy also acted in and directed Spanish plays for the department. As a member of the faculty, Nancy had the privilege of attending a breakfast and ceremony to honor Mother Theresa of Calcutta, now Saint Theresa, who was in attendance and given a special Marquette award. It is a memory she will always cherish.
Nancy spent twelve years at The Crenshaw School in Florida writing and developing the elementary, middle and high school World Language program. In addition to regular classroom instruction, in the early years Nancy also had the opportunity to teach on the set of a Disney t.v. show and even had a speaking part in one episode. She also took part in a school musical production and a variety show of past t.v. favorites. Her love of theater and acting is carried over to the classroom where students often are asked to write and perform skits in the target language and Nancy is known to spontaneously burst into song. Her students have commented that going to her class is like going to a show.
At The New Academy, Nancy will be teaching world languages as well as overseeing curriculum, plans, and classroom teaching practices of her colleagues. Elementary students will enjoy introductory Spanish through oral practice, some writing, coloring, stories and songs. Nancy is especially excited to start the middle school students on their four semester journey through Latin, Italian, French and Spanish. In this two-year exploratory cycle, sixth and seventh graders will not only learn the basics of each language but will also delve into the art, culture, history and music of the target language. High school students will concentrate their study on Spanish and their learning will be supplemented by interactive smart board activities, videos, skits, cultural readings and art.
Nancy's love of education, not just Spanish teaching, is evident in her enthusiasm, dedication, organization and communication. She has had experience at private and public, small and large schools, from elementary to university level, and happily brings her knowledge and skills to The New Academy.
