Laurie Wilbur is a creative and motivated middle and high school teacher at The New Academy.
Growing up in Connecticut, she spent her youth participating in equestrian sports, developing her instrumental music talent, and becoming passionate about education. She spent several years tutoring and teaching younger students to play the flute and oboe, while being a member of several concert, marching, and pit bands. She has competed in instrumental music competitions across the country, in including Walt Disney World, San Francisco, and Virginia Beach. As an equestrian, she spent her teen years teaching riding lessons to children in the Hunt Seat discipline.
Laurie earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut, majoring in History with a minor in Native American and Indigenous Studies. Graduating In the top of her class, she also founded the UConn History Club, served as president, and raised funds for local historical museums. The last semester as an undergraduate, she tutored ninth-grade students at the Hartford Youth Scholars Foundation in the areas of reading, writing, and World History. She also holds a certification from Langue Onze in Toulouse, France in the areas of French Language and Culture and spent an entire summer overseas, exploring places such as Paris, Toulouse, and Barcelona.
Upon graduation, Laurie relocated to Central Florida with the goal of making a positive impact on students. She believes that education must be creative and interactive in order for students to become engaged. Her organized and logical approach to education serves as a model for college-bound young adults.
Laurie spends her spare time teaching equestrian lessons and spending time with her kitten, Quincy.
